Board Governance Scorecard Pro
Find out how well your board is working, from the people who know best: your directors. Send each director a private, anonymous online survey, then see scores for seven areas of governance, where the board is strong, where it falls short, where directors disagree, and what they said in their own words. Turn the gaps into an action plan and take the results to the board as a report or a presentation.
Welcome. Tell us who you are to get started.
The Pro planner is free until November 30, 2026. We ask for a few details the first time you use it on this device, so we know who the tool is helping.
1. Board and review
Name the board under review and the period it covers. The review date sets which actions are overdue.
Scoring thresholds
2. Survey questions
Thirty-four statements across seven areas of governance, written for any non-profit board. Switch off any that do not fit your board, reword them, or add your own. Every survey also asks for an overall rating out of 10 and three open questions.
3. Collect responses
Choose how directors’ views come in. The online survey is the most reliable: each director answers privately and anonymously on their own device.
Sign in to send the survey to your directors.
Set up a new survey
The survey uses the questions in section 2 as they are now. Once the survey opens, the questions are locked.
Use this if you collected answers another way, for example on paper or with Microsoft Forms or Google Forms. The template has one row per director and one column per statement, using the questions in section 2.
Ratings are 1 to 5; leave a cell blank or enter DK for don’t know. Uploading replaces the results currently loaded. Keep the file somewhere safe, or delete it once uploaded: it holds each director’s answers.
Rate each statement yourself, as chair, from 1 to 5. These scores are used only when no survey or uploaded results are loaded. They give a quick read, but one person’s view is no substitute for hearing from every director.
4. Results at a glance
No results yet. Collect responses in section 3 to see results here.
What the review is saying
5. Scores by governance area
Average score out of 5 for each area, with the share of ratings that agree or strongly agree. Dashed markers show your last review, where entered.
6. Statement by statement
Every statement, its average out of 5, and how directors’ ratings were spread. Select a column heading to sort.
7. Strengths and gaps
Where the board is strongest
Where the board most needs to improve
8. Where directors disagree
Statements where directors’ ratings were most spread out, and statements many directors could not judge. Both are worth a conversation before deciding what to do.
9. What directors said
Comments word for word, without names, in a random order. Read them alongside the scores: they explain the why.
10. Action plan
What the board will do about the gaps. Select a gap in section 7 to start an action from it, or add your own.
11. Review checks
On track meets good practice, Watch needs attention, and Action should be dealt with before the results go to the board.
